Rationale

Individuals receiving care in mental health institutions often face unique challenges in maintaining oral hygiene due to physical, cognitive, and behavioural limitations. Oral health is frequently overlooked in such settings, despite its significant impact on overall health, quality of life, and systemic well-being. The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, conducted an Oral Health Screening, Education, and Prevention Camp on 20 April 2026 at the Regional Mental Hospital, Thane.

 

Objectives

  • To provide oral health screening and basic care for special care individuals 
  • To promote oral hygiene practices tailored to institutional settings 
  • To facilitate early detection and management of oral conditions 
  • To build capacity among healthcare providers for sustained oral care delivery 
  • To advocate for integration of oral health within mental healthcare systems 

 

Target Population

  • Patients receiving care at the mental health facility 
  • Nursing staff and caregivers (as primary facilitators of daily care) 

 

Core Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Education Sessions

  • Customized education sessions for patients and caregivers 
  • Focus on: 
    • Basic oral hygiene practices 
    • Simplified and assisted oral care techniques 
    • Importance of oral health in overall well-being 

2. Oral Health Screening

  • Comprehensive oral examinations conducted 
  • Assessment included: 
    • Dental caries 
    • Periodontal conditions 
    • Oral hygiene status 
  • Identification and referral of cases requiring advanced care 

3. Basic Preventive and Curative Treatment

  • Delivery of essential preventive care 
  • Management of minor dental complaints 
  • Immediate relief-oriented interventions provided where feasible 

 

4. Advocacy and Capacity Building

A key highlight of the initiative was advocacy and institutional engagement:

  • Interaction with the Medical Superintendent and Nursing Superintendent 
  • Capacity-building discussions with nursing staff on: 
    • Incorporating oral care into daily patient management 
    • Recognizing early signs of oral diseases 
    • Establishing referral pathways for dental care 
  • Emphasis on integrating oral health into routine mental healthcare protocols 

 

Conclusion

The Oral Health Promotion Initiative at Regional Mental Hospital, Thane successfully demonstrated the value of integrating oral health within mental healthcare systems. Through compassionate care, provider engagement, and system-level advocacy, the initiative aligns with the vision, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life - Inclusive Care for Every Mind, Every Smile.”
