Action on Free Sugar : For Better Health and Oral Health by Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, India


Dept. of Public Health Dentistry, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences is observing World Oral health Day, 20th March, 2021 (#BeProudOfYourMouth) and to further communicate health & oral health risks of free sugars in Sugar Sweetened Beverages, a petition has been made. Sugar directly contributes to Dental Decay (Caries) and multiple health problems like Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases. As per WHO guidelines, consumption of daily free sugars should be limited to less than 10% of total energy intake. 
Therefore, following Recommendations will be sent to relevant Policy Makers for the necessary “CHANGE”: 
1. Sugar Tax, Front of package labelling & Regulating direct advertisement, 
2. Initiating Dialogues with food manufactures to reduce free sugar
3. School based policy changes (promotion of fruit and vegetable alternative, Healthy Environment within the school campus to ban sale of processed food/ drinks).
